My Day With Real Athletes

Last Saturday I finally had the opportunity to join George at AVIVA Parallel Success Coach and Athlete Talent Introduction Day. This was held at Brunel University Sports Centre in London which is an amazing place. It has had the honour of Usain Bolt and Mo Farah to name but a few and also had training sessions there before the Olympic Games.

This is a full in-door complex with a 100m track, Long Jump pits, Pole Vault area and other training areas for many athletes.

I was introduced to many athletes with varying disabilities but all have the same passion for sports, some had come to get there classification and others were taking part for the first time, and some like George who enjoyed the company of being with other athletes of his ability.

The day for me was to find out whether our warm-up and cool-down strategies were correct for

George or totally in-correct. I was assured that thesame elements are correct for able and disabled athletes and that there was no difference. Athletes such as George and others always want to be included, not excluded.

To top the event off which was organised by Liz Purbrick, Disability Athletics Support Officer (South), we had Olivia Breen a Para Olympian Bronze Medallist T38 4 X 100M Relay who came to talk about her experience in the Olympic Games this year.

Coaches and athletes were really inspired and took full advantage of photos and autographs. Olivia is a great ambassador promoting the games for disabled athletes.

As you can see, George and I had fun, laughs and an enjoyable learning

day. (I was even asked if I was involved in the Olympic Games lol.)
