England International debut for Holly

Following her disappointment at the recent English Schools Championships in Gateshead, Andover AC athlete Holly Mills was back on top of her game as she made her International debut for England in the Schools International Athletic Board International Games held at the Grangemouth Stadium, Scotland.

This International match brings together the best athletes from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales and Mills was selected for this match following her second place at the English Schools Championships. Alongside her in the team was Eleanor Broome who had beaten her to gold in Gateshead.

Conditions in Scotland were far from ideal with a strong, gusty wind and far from summery temperatures making things difficult for the long jumpers. Both Mills and Broome started the competition with No Jumps in the first round, however, it was the English duo that coped best with the conditions thereafter and dominated the competition from the second round.

Mills made her first mark in round two jumping to 6.06m but Broome followed this with a lifetime best of 6.15m to take an early lead. Neither girl improved on these in the 3rd round but Mills then took the lead with a new PB leap of 6.23m in round 4 with Broome jumping 6.09m. Mills followed this with a new lifetime best jump in round 5, leaping out to 6.26m. With Broome unable to improve her distance with her final 2 jumps and Mills finishing with a 6.19m jump, the English girls took the gold and silver medals.

This was Holly’s first experience of international competition and to come away with the gold medal was a magnificent achievement. In addition to this Holly also picked up a special gold medal award for achieving the best overall performance by an English female athlete at the match. After enjoying her first taste of international action Holly is relishing the prospect of future internationals in the coming seasons.
